EDUCATION FOR THE SERIOUS BAREFOOTER

The Oregon School of Natural Hoof Care was started in 2006 with the philosophy that good hoof care begins with an understanding of the internal structures of the hoof and the biology that affects them.  The staff of twelve instructors have worked together for years as a cottage research group, incorporating into the school’s curriculum what they know from their own backgrounds and what is being discovered by other professionals and the research scientists who continue to reveal the secrets of hoof growth and function.  Thus, students are encouraged to base their trimming practice on many sources rather than on a technique advocated by a single clinician. To facilitate extra study, the school’s library, available for student referrals, is one of the largest collections on the hoof available in any one location.

At present, training at the school consists of two levels:
  • The Whole Horse Trim session, emphasizes the basics: animal care and the proper trimming of horses, miniatures, mules, and donkeys (7 days).
  • The Advanced Hoof Care, session focuses on problems faced by practicing hoof care providers, especially the rehabilitation of sore, damaged, diseased, and contracted feet (7 days).
Both sessions take place in a family (and pet) friendly resort atmosphere. Students enjoy instructor trimming demonstrations and individual supervision during the day and lecture and video presentations during the evening.
